The First Time - Silk Scarf

Images via

Many years ago I remember my boss telling me excitedly that he had just had his first martini. He was close to 60 at the time and he told me how glad it made him to think that that even at his age he still had lots of 'first times' to look forward to.

I thought of him again recently when I bought my first silk scarf. I've always had lots of scarves but most of them I've received as gifts - a beautiful black devore one from my sister, a pink pashmina and a graduated pink raw silk one from my mother-in-law, and a wildly coloured cotton one on a black backgound that has been a wardrobe staple since my best friend gave it to me as a 21st present. As a die-hard devotee of the all-black wardrobe scarves have come to the rescue many times allowing me to change the look and feel of an outfit without changing the basic black building blocks.

But a silk scarf is something else. I think I'm in love. The weightlessness, the drape, the 'floatiness' and suprisingly the warmth have all taken me by surprise - I never want to take it off! So here's to 'first times' at any stage of life. May they always be this simple, pleasureable and surprising.

  1. Silk scarves always remind me of my mother. She loved them and I still have lots of hers. One of my favourite photos is of mum sitting on a step by a windy beach with a silk scarf tied on her head and then round her neck, a la Audrey Hepburn.

I clearly remember the first one I bought. I was about nineteen or twenty. I bought it from Liberty's in Manchester. It was beautiful. It had a broad black border all around the edges and the central pattern I imagined to be Russian inspired. It had a deep turquoise and cherry red pattern. I used to wear it with black in a triangle around my shoulders or with russian blouses...it was the fashion back then...I wish I still had it...I probably gave it away. My next was a little silk chiffon scarf also from Liberty's in beautiful green and mustard, very subtle shades and I had a layered peasant dress from Miss Selfridges in the same shades ...I still have that one...

Wow sorry didn't mean to go off on such a trip down memory lane...thanks for the reminder Caz...

  3. Such a coincidence, I was just thinking I would do a post about silk scarves, but not as an accessory, although the ones you've got here are gorgeous... I was going to post about using them as pillow slips! A while ago I read that sleeping on silk prevents wrinkles, and although I was skeptical initially, I would have to say it works - I'm not waking up with huge lines in my face, at least!

Thanks for sharing your trip down memory lane with me. Your mother sounds like a very stylish woman and I'm sure the apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree! I remember wearing scarves in a big triangle too - I thought I was the height of fahsion..

So sad to have a silk scarf that isn't soft but lovely to have one you bought in Rome! Is it raw silk perhaps which is also beautiful but not soft?

I've heard that about silk pillow slips too (and they are supposed to keep your hairstyle in check too!). I'm sure you must come across lots of silk scarves in your op-shop travels and pillow slips seem like a fabulous way to re-purpose the. Looking forward to reading your post...
