You Know Christmas Is On Its Way When...

Image from dnamuse

...the shops are full of panettone. I know you can buy panettone at specialist places thoughout the year but my addiction is such that I wait until it is absolutely impossible to avoid. I like it for breakfast, morning tea, afternoon tea and supper. See my problem? I can polish off one a week if I'm not careful and I'm sure that's not how they were designed to be consumed. Should they be shared perhaps?

Maybe the secret to moderation is to only eat panettone (hot cross buns, mince pies) that you've made yourself. Perhaps this year I'll give it a whirl using this recipe from Australian Gourmet Traveller. What do you think?

  1. Mmm, yummy. A treat my sister first brought home from exciting Melbourne one Christmas. :-)
I always expect it to be really dry, but it isn't!
Whereas the hot cross buns I made the other day...nice fresh, but very very dry a day later. :-/

  2. That's the problem with baking in batches isn't it? Did you use yeast or baking powder as a raising agent? I hate it when you go to all that trouble and end up with dry little things the next day (scones I'm talking to you!) Next time I bake a batch of bready things I'm going to freeze the ones I don't need right away and just warm them in the oven when I need them. Still haven't made you yummy looking cinammon buns yet.

  3. I can't get over how much Christmas stock is already in stores. It's driving me a bit nutty. A little panicky, in fact.
We have The Brain That Changes Itself and I have heard such good things. It was given to my partner but I might need to snavel it for myself.

  4. I used a heck of a lot of yeast, and it looked soo nice before baking. Left to rise by the fire, everything. Next time, I'll make maybe four buns, and make the rest into a loaf for toasting. :-)
Now those cinnamon buns- amazingly good. Even the next day. :-D

  6. I adore panettone - to me it's an essential part of Christmas. I like to start my day by dunking a huge chunk, bit by bit, into my coffee - bliss. xo
