I'm pretty 'slow and slack' with your vegies too but they don't seem to mind. This year I've also had quite a lot of luck with things in pots too - strawberries, blueberries, cumquats. Somehow I always feel more responsible for watering and attending to plants in pots than to those actually planted in the ground.
